Babushka and The Mitten

Here it is finally: Z's acting debut as Babushka in The Mitten. Apologies in advance for the quality of the video. Our camera is old and only does 3 minute segments. I stitched the segments together but there are some small missing bits because of having to wait for the camera. First video is some warm ups and the second is the show.

It's difficult to follow the story as the dialogue is very quiet. This is not really the camera's fault, most of the kids were pretty much whispering and wearing masks to boot. The story is a traditional Ukrainian folk tale (here at Amazon). The basic story: Nicky's mitts have holes so he asks Babushka to knit some new ones. He wants white ones. Babushka says he'll lose them in the snow if they're white, but agrees. Nicky then loses a mitt as foretold by Babushka. All the animals of the forest find the nice cosy mitt and move in for a while. Bear's giant sneeze scatters the animals and Nicky finds his (somewhat stretched) mitten.

Babushka is wonderful. She carries on in character in the background while the rest of the play is going on. Along with more knitting, she whips up a cup of tea, does some cleaning and starts on supper. Z is a natural on stage and almost steals the show. We were very proud parents!
